Surgical options for Moderate to Severe Sleep Apnoea

Surgical options for Moderate to Severe Sleep Apnoea

Snoring is caused by partial blockage of the airway during sleep. In bad snorers, when they fall into deep sleep, the airway may block completely causing a drop in the amount of oxygen in the blood stream. This is detected by sensors in the brain that partially wake the snorer and start them breathing again.

In sleep apnoea suffers, this cycle can repeat literally hundreds of time during a night and can lead to serious health consequences, including increased risk of heart problems and stroke.

Nasal surgery can help patients with moderate to severe sleep apnoea that have tried CPAP, but were unable to use the device to solve their sleep apnoea.

Oral surgery for sleep apnoea suffers is designed to open up the upper airway, making it more stable so it will not narrow and obstruct during sleep. This type of oral surgery should help the symptoms of sleep apnoea get better and therefore reduce the danger of the condition.
